“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Meed Years ago, my pastor asked me a simple question: “Rose, if you could do whatever you wanted regardless of money, what would it be?” At the time, I was working a corporate job. It was good, solid work that paid the bills and ensured a secure future, but not necessarily what I wanted to do. Part time, I was serving meals and outreaching to the women and children of the surrounding projects of our church. I took the question to heart and went home to think about it. As I searched deep down and thought about how I wanted to spend my life (what made me happy and fulfilled), I wrote this vision statement: “To shelter women and children and rebuild their lives through the love of Jesus Christ.” So, I dutifully reported back to David and was met with an equally simple question: “Then why don’t you do it?” Ha! It’s that simple really? I guess it is! (Not really, but great friendship, some provocative thought, and commitment sure helps). Ten years later, I was able to be a part of opening and maintaining the largest shelter for women and children in the city of Atlanta. Over time, we saw thousands of families receive the basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter. Hundreds of thousands of lives changed because of loving Him with all and loving one another as much. I tell this story because of the Margaret Meed quote above. I believe with all my heart that Atlanta has been and will continue to change because of a small group of thoughtful, committed people. Lastly, I believe with all my heart that the nations and your cities are going to change for the same reasons. P.S.
